Background of the study
Traditional religious institutions have long been recognized as key players in maintaining social order and resolving conflicts within communities. In Ife Central Local Government Area, Osun State, these institutions operate alongside modern legal systems to provide mediation and reconciliation services based on cultural and religious values. Traditional religious leaders often use customary methods, including rituals, counsel, and community dialogue, to address disputes and restore social harmony. Recent studies have demonstrated that such institutions can be highly effective in de-escalating conflicts, particularly in societies where trust in formal judicial systems is low (Akinyemi, 2023; Adekunle, 2024). The integration of spiritual and cultural elements in conflict resolution offers a unique approach that resonates with community values and fosters long-term peace. This study investigates how traditional religious institutions contribute to conflict resolution, analyzing their methods, effectiveness, and challenges in a rapidly modernizing society. By exploring the role of these institutions in Ife Central, the research aims to highlight the potential of indigenous conflict resolution mechanisms in promoting social cohesion and justice (Olusola, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Although traditional religious institutions play a prominent role in conflict resolution in Ife Central, there is a lack of comprehensive research on their operational effectiveness and limitations. Conflicts that are resolved through customary methods sometimes lead to outcomes that are perceived as biased or non-inclusive by certain community segments. Furthermore, the coexistence of traditional and modern legal systems often creates jurisdictional ambiguities, leading to inconsistencies in conflict management. The limited documentation of these indigenous methods hampers efforts to integrate them with formal judicial processes. This study seeks to examine the challenges and opportunities associated with traditional religious conflict resolution, with the goal of identifying strategies that can enhance their legitimacy and effectiveness in contemporary society (Eze, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  • To evaluate the role of traditional religious institutions in conflict resolution.

  • To identify the methods used by these institutions in mediating disputes.

  • To propose recommendations for improving the integration of traditional and formal conflict resolution mechanisms.

Research questions

  • How do traditional religious institutions resolve conflicts in Ife Central?

  • What are the key strengths and weaknesses of their conflict resolution methods?

  • How can traditional conflict resolution be better integrated with formal judicial processes?

Research Hypotheses

  • Traditional religious institutions significantly contribute to conflict resolution in Ife Central.

  • The methods employed by these institutions are effective in restoring social harmony.

  • Integrating traditional and formal conflict resolution systems improves overall conflict management.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the contribution of traditional religious institutions to conflict resolution in Ife Central. The insights gained will help policymakers and community leaders to integrate indigenous practices with modern legal frameworks, fostering a more holistic approach to conflict management (Chinwe, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to assessing the impact of traditional religious institutions on conflict resolution in Ife Central Local Government Area, Osun State. It does not extend to other forms of conflict resolution or regions outside the designated area, and is based on local case studies and interviews.

Definitions of terms

  • Traditional religious institutions: Indigenous religious organizations that utilize customary practices to mediate conflicts.

  • Conflict resolution: The process of resolving disputes through dialogue, mediation, or other non-violent means.

  • Social cohesion: The strength of relationships and sense of solidarity among members of a community.
